Birr Castle
Birr, Co. Offaly.
The castle of 90 rooms sits on a 1200 acre walled estate. There has been a castle on the site since 1170 and the early 17th century castle is still the family home of Lord and Lady Rosse, descendants of the Parsons family who have been there since 1620.
Gardens & Science Centre
The magnificent gardens include a herbaceous border at the foot of the castle looks over the Camcor river with the oldest suspension bridge in Ireland. There are champion trees and formal millennium gardens and a wild flower meadow that has not been ploughed in 400 years
The Science Centre museum has features on Telescope/Astronomy, Engineering and Photography including the oldest intact Dark Room built in 1840. The worlds largest telescope for some time was built in 1845 by the 3rd Earl of Rosse and can be seen in the Gardens.
Outing included a guided tour of the castle.
